A New Jersey living will, or “instruction directive,” allows a principal to make choices concerning their end-of-life medical preferences. The contents of this document will help physicians determine whether they should administer or withhold life-sustaining procedures when the principal is incapacitated. If the principal wishes to elect a health care agent to communicate their medical decisions, they may also draft a Medical Power of Attorney.

“Instruction directive” means a writing which provides instructions and direction regarding the declarant’s wishes for health care in the event that the declarant subsequently lacks decision making capacity.
